Think how much more exciting the European championships would be if EVERY European nation got a spot in it. Maybe do pre-matches all across Europe at neutral sites, then have the last 16 or whatever in single knockout in a single country.

You could do WC qualification in the summer before the WC - once again, make it into one big tournament right after the domestic season.

You may enjoy international football, but the argument that nationalism is what makes it good is weak. Also, do you really enjoy England - Malta or your local derby? I'd argue that the local derby is more interesting to generic Englishman than almost every international fixture that isn't at the European Championships or the World Cup.

Like most football fans, I really enjoy international football. Your country is put up against the skill of another. Its great soccer combined with nationalism.

The more I think about it, the more I wonder if FIFA has any idea what it's talking about. When Blatter calls this "child slavery"...what does he mean? How can this be logically compared to that? If anything, the current contractual regime is the one treating 12-15 year olds as property.

In the end, I think this case signals that something is very wrong in European soccer. There have been rumblings about the CAS before, but Kakuta should take this to the European Court of Human Rights (with Chelsea-sponsored lawyers, natch.) Or, Chelsea should jurisdiction-shop and find some ornery country judge to say that this is in controvention of french/english/swiss/whatever national law.

He's a 15 year old kid who signed a non-contract (designed specifically to be a non-contract), that FIFA is now unilaterally calling a contract, and then FIFA/CAS imposed damages significantly beyond harms done to Lens in the name of protecting the principle of "contractual stability."

Nobody was going to rise up in support of Adrien Mutu, whose massive fine was unconscionable, but here we have a kid bankrupted in the name of fighting "child slavery," when in fact FIFA's just protecting those who pay the bills. Where's the French or English attorney general who wants a name for themselves? They should take a chunk out of FIFA, as they, not FIFA, determine child labour laws. Or so I thought.

After seeing Arsenal control Celtic and destroy both Everton and Portsmouth, that wouldn't have been a poor pick at all.

I still don't think they'll win, but all those young players are a year older - Walcott, Diaby (what a player), Sagna, Nasri, Vela, Eduardo, Song, Denilson, Clichy, etc. etc. Every one *should* be a year better developed this time around, and that's a scary amount of new talent there.

Compared to how all the other top 4 teams have their own problems, maybe H.U and I were too hard on Arsenal...we'll see if Diaby really is the new Viera, Denilson the Petit, and Walcott the new Overmars. If so...

Apparently I should have made some predictions... I really wouldn't have had anything to add other than Arsenal FTW! It might not have been a serious pick, but it wouldn't have looked stupid (since the team probably wouldn't be far off) and if I was right I could have basked in the glory of not picking one of the teams that most of the others picked. Of course, now Arsenal's probably going to go and lose to Hull or something like that.
