The 56 year old with an arthritic hip broke his ankle attempting a poll vault. It is yet to be disclosed why a man in such a disposition was attempting a poll vault.
A piece of commentary:
"Danny Higginbottom scored his first goal for Sunderland and he will never score one of bigger significance!" - as Sunderland took a 1-0 lead in the the 53rd minute of their match at home to Newcastle. The match ended in a draw.
Please could somebody tell me why this will be classified as the most important goal in Danny Higginbottom's career at Sunderland? If this goal occurred in a cup final, perhaps the commentator could make that statement; if it occurred in the final minutes of a relegation battle on the last game of the season, perhaps the commentator could make that statement. Unfortunate for the commentator, it occurred on Gameday 13 of 38 of the regular season in the 53rd minute of a game that would finish 1-1. It was a regular goal against a rival team. Nothing more.

But it was a derby match and we all know that derby matches count for more points in the final standings than other matches where you don't need as much character to win.
